Race Report, Striders 10km @ Homebush

Time for some speed and back to Homebush the site of my current 10k distance PB. A fairly flat course in a figure 8 type shape based on the Homebush Olympic games site. A small loop (around 800m) then a large loop (around 4km), repeat and then another small loop to finish.

Got there around 6am to help set up (doing backup learning on the new electronic timing system). The mozzies made an appearance at around 6:30 and another large crowd, around 250+ runners faced the gun @ 7am. Someone tripped over a couple of metres into the race and there was a bit of congestion but after the first km it was pretty open running. The plan was for even pacing throughout and the first 3km were just that. After that however I started drifting a little and while the lungs felt ok the legs could not go faster. Finished up with 41:43 6 seconds slower than last month at Lane Cove and 20 seconds off my PB, however it was 1:40 faster than the race at Homebush at the same time last year leading into Canberra.

Probably a bit ambitious to expect a PB based upon what distance I have been running and also since I have not been as diligent on my speed sessions in the last couple of weeks. Plenty of time for speed after I knock over the next couple of longer races!

Did not get a chance to talk to too many runners afterwards as I found the guy that fell over and made sure the St Johns people patched him up and then went through the steps in finalising the electronic finish results with Action (we'll be flying solo in 2 races time as he goes on holidays!). Ended up a beautiful morning, although again quite humid.

Distance Lap Time Split
1km 4:01 4:01
2km 3:58 7:59
3km 4:02 12:01
4km 4:12 16:13
5km 4:05 20:19
6km 4:15 24:34
7km 4:17 28:51
8km 4:27 33:18
9km 4:21 37:39
10km 4:04 41:43

Weekly Summary
Total distance 92km and Parrot Predictor says 3:28:08 for a marathon time. This coming week is another tough one with probably 30km tomorrow in the Striders STaR, some shorter hit outs mid week and a mini taper for the big one, Six Foot Track. This time next week I expect to have done my first 6 ft and will no doubt be hooking into a few refreshing ales!

Well done today Dave. A bit slower than what you would have hoped for but considering the kms you've been logging, not surprising. As next month's run is during the taper for Canberra, you should get a PB that day. Stay positive and see you next week for our debut 6 Foot Track.

Good run today. Especially with the haevy training in your legs at present. As Horrie said, the speed should return when you hit the Canberra taper. Good luck with Six Foot.
